SmartestEnergy Backs Zenco’s Planned 420 GWh Biomethane Facility

SmartestEnergy has signed a long-term biomethane offtake and environmental products agreement with Zenco Group to support a planned UK renewable gas facility.

Announced on 13 October, the project is expected to produce up to 420 GWh of renewable gas annually, with commercial operation currently scheduled for 2028.

The first development phase will focus on biomethane injection into the gas grid. A second phase is intended to introduce renewable fuel production, creating scope to adjust the product mix as the project develops.

SmartestEnergy will take the biomethane and exclusively market its Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin and associated environmental products.

Zenco plans to combine established anaerobic digestion technology with cultivated seaweed feedstock as marine cultivation expands. Seaweed does not require agricultural land or freshwater for cultivation, although the project’s commercial output remains dependent on successful development and feedstock scale-up.

The agreement provides a commercial route to market for the proposed facility. Its significance lies in linking future gas production with both physical offtake and environmental attribute marketing, two central components of renewable gas project development.
