EnviTec Expands Lohne Farm Plant with Biomethane Upgrading

EnviTec Biogas is adding gas upgrading capacity to the Timphaus farming business’s biogas plant in Lohne, Germany, enabling the site to combine flexible electricity generation with biomethane production.

The project was announced on 23 July. Construction of the 561 Nm³-per-hour EnviThan installation began in January, with initial gas-grid injection targeted for October if work progresses as planned. That target is not confirmation that injection has already started.

Modules are being prefabricated and tested at EnviTec’s Saerbeck production facility before transport to the farm following factory acceptance testing.

The permitting process also allowed expansion of the wider biogas operation, opening the way for greater use of manure and slurry as feedstocks.

The original plant has an electrical output of 549 kW and was supplemented in 2020 by a flexible combined heat and power unit rated at 1,500 kW.

Adding upgrading equipment gives the operator another route to market while retaining the ability to generate electricity when demand makes that attractive. The development illustrates how established agricultural biogas assets can be adapted as their commercial circumstances change.
