Nel and Rheinmetall Explore Modular Hydrogen-Based Synthetic Fuel Production

Nel and Rheinmetall have signed a memorandum of understanding to examine decentralised synthetic fuel production using renewable hydrogen.

The collaboration, announced on 13 October, combines Nel’s electrolyser technology with Rheinmetall’s Giga PtX concept and systems-integration experience. The companies will assess modular fuel production for defence and critical infrastructure applications, including opportunities in Norway.

The proposed approach places production closer to customers, aiming to reduce dependence on centralised refineries and lengthy fuel transport routes.

Nel would provide technology for producing renewable hydrogen through electrolysis, while Rheinmetall would contribute the wider fuel-production concept and integration capabilities.

The partners say synthetic fuels could substitute for conventional fuels without changes to their intended end-use applications. Actual emissions performance would depend on the production pathway, electricity supply and other inputs.

The announcement is an agreement to explore opportunities, rather than a final investment decision or a firm electrolyser supply order.

The next commercial challenge is turning the concept into defined projects with suitable renewable power, customers and infrastructure. The partnership highlights energy security as an additional driver for hydrogen-derived fuel development.
