Equinor subsidiary East Point Energy has completed construction and begun operating the Citrus Flatts battery storage facility in Harlingen, Texas. The project has a power rating of 100 MW and an energy capacity of 200 MWh.
Announced on 3 September, the start-up makes Citrus Flatts East Point’s second operating storage project, following the 10 MW/20 MWh Sunset Ridge facility. Equinor said the two assets together could supply approximately 30,000 homes for up to two hours.
Both projects operate on a merchant basis in the ERCOT electricity market. Equinor links their operation with its wider power-trading capabilities, including collaboration with Danske Commodities.
Battery storage can absorb electricity when supply is abundant and discharge it during periods of higher demand, providing flexibility as wind and solar generation expand.
The company also reported that four battery projects totalling 80 MW/160 MWh were under construction in Virginia’s PJM market, targeting commercial operation in early 2027. Those developments remain separate from the operational Texas facilities.
