US solar and storage provider Sunrun and energy technology company SPAN plan to expand their cooperation to distributed AI data centres. In newly built residential developments, compute nodes are to be combined with solar systems, battery storage and smart electrical panels. The first deployments are planned in Texas and other markets that have not yet been named.
With the concept, the companies aim to provide additional computing capacity by tapping unused connection capacity at homes. The expanded cooperation combines the XFRA compute platform already developed by SPAN with Sunrun’s solar and storage systems and its installation and service network.
XFRA: Distributed AI Computing via Home Connections
SPAN unveiled its XFRA platform for distributed AI data centres in April 2026. The concept envisages distributing compute nodes across numerous homes and using unused electrical connection capacity for additional computing power. SPAN aims to complement the expansion of AI infrastructure without having to build a new high-capacity grid connection at each site.
Each XFRA compute node uses 16 liquid-cooled NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPUs. Control software distributes computing tasks across the individual sites, taking into account the required response times and the energy available at each location. Sunrun adds solar systems and several battery storage units per home. The systems are intended to ensure the power supply for the households and compute nodes and to prevent the additional computing load from overloading local distribution grids.
SPAN had previously announced a test of XFRA with 100 homes starting in the third quarter of 2026 and a broader rollout in the US from 2027. For 2027, the company has also stated a target of building gigawatt-scale AI inference infrastructure. The published information does not state how much electrical power a single compute node requires or what share of these expansion targets Sunrun is to take on.
Business Model: Compensation for Households and Additional Revenue for Sunrun
Sunrun and SPAN plan to incorporate the systems together with homebuilders at the construction stage of new residential developments. According to the companies, homebuilders and homeowners are to incur no additional acquisition costs, and home purchase prices are not to rise as a result of the installation. Households receive solar systems, several battery storage units and a smart electrical panel under a prepaid lease model. Ongoing compensation is planned for providing a site for the compute node. Specific amounts and final contract terms were not disclosed.
Sunrun also plans to integrate the home batteries into its grid services programmes. This could allow the batteries to also supply power to the grid, in addition to supplying the households and compute nodes. The companies did not explain how the available storage capacity is to be allocated among these uses.
Sunrun and SPAN have worked together since 2022, when they launched a joint offering of smart electrical panels combined with solar and storage systems in Puerto Rico. With the expansion to include XFRA, Sunrun aims to tap additional revenue sources, while SPAN wants to increase the number of installed AI compute nodes.
The planned combination of home energy systems and AI computing extends the range of uses for distributed power generation and storage. Implementation will require coordination of household power supply, compute node operation and the provision of grid services. Sunrun and SPAN have so far not named specific new-build projects, participating homebuilders or commissioning dates for their expanded cooperation.
