Enertrag Joins Aviation Initiative Aireg

Sustainable aviation fuels are of great importance for reducing emissions in global aviation. Enertrag is joining the Aireg Aviation Initiative to work with other members to promote the climate-friendly transformation of aviation.

Aireg (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V.) was founded in 2011 as an association of companies and organizations from industry, research and science. As a non-profit initiative, Aireg is committed to the availability and use of renewable energies in aviation in order to achieve the aviation industry’s ambitious CO2 reduction targets. Its members come from various sectors of the renewable energy value chain for aviation. These range from research at universities and major research institutions, equipment manufacturers and operators, bio-refineries, the petroleum industry, engine and aircraft manufacturers, government organisations, non-governmental organisations, and airports to airlines.

Enertrag has a focus on the production of green hydrogen and the integration of renewable energies in various applications, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The company runs numerous projects in Germany and South Africa aimed at promoting the production and use of SAF. In Germany, for example, “Concrete Chemicals” with partners Cemex and Sasol is a lighthouse project in which captured CO2 from cement production is converted into sustainable aviation fuels using green hydrogen.

Enertrag is also involved in developing the Schwedt and Schwarze Pumpe sites in Lusatia into centers for the energy transition. From Enertrag’s perspective, the HyShift project in South Africa, which recently won the COP28 Energy Transition Changemakers Award, is also particularly noteworthy. According to Enertrag, the project impressively demonstrates the potential of green hydrogen as a key component for a sustainable future of aviation. Another unique selling point of Enertrag is the innovative integrated power plant, which combines wind energy, photovoltaics and green hydrogen in one integrated system.

“We are very pleased to be part of aireg and to work together with other members on the further development and promotion of sustainable aviation fuels. Our projects in Germany and South Africa, in particular the award-winning HyShift project, demonstrate our commitment and innovative strength in the field of SAF,” says Dr. Tobias Bischof-Niemz, Board Member for Projects International & Technology at Enertrag, about the new membership.

“ENERTRAG’s commitment to expanding the German sites is crucial to our goal of establishing Germany as a leading market for SAF. We are therefore looking forward to future cooperation and exchange,” adds Melanie Form, Managing Director and member of the Aireg Management Board, on Enertrag’s membership.
