Nel Hydrogen US, a subsidiary of the Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA, has received an order for a PEM electrolyzer. The containerized PEM unit of the MC500 type, with a capacity of 2.5 MW, is intended for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project in the northeast of Scotland.
The client is the company Hydrasun, which won the bid to design and integrate the hydrogen refueling station and its associated infrastructure. The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project is being realized through a joint venture between BP and the Aberdeen City Council. The goal is to establish a scalable green hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility in the city of Aberdeen, powered by renewable energy.
“We are excited that Hydrasun has selected Nel for this meaningful project. Hydrasun is a professional enabler with quality backing, and we look forward to our collaboration, supporting them with fast-to-market and reliable electrolyser equipment”,, said Håkon Volldal, President and CEO of Nel.
The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub is set to be developed in three phases, with scaling intended to meet the growing demand for hydrogen. The first phase involves the construction of a hydrogen refueling station for buses and trucks, powered by a solar power system. The goal is to produce over 800 kilograms of green hydrogen daily. According to BP and the Aberdeen City Council, this amount will be sufficient to fuel 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles. In the second phase, production could expand to more than three tons of green hydrogen per day by 2030, to meet the needs of road, rail, freight, and shipping transport. In the third phase, production could be further scaled to provide hydrogen for heating buildings and potentially for export, according to the joint venture partners.
