US solar company Sunrun Inc. has announced that it is now the first and only storage and solar systems company to exceed one million residential customers. This solidifies the company’s position as the largest developer of residential clean energy systems in the U.S., Sunrun announced.
This milestone comes after the company reported record installation numbers for storage systems. According to Sunrun, this underscores its evolution from a pure-play solar company to a multi-product clean energy company.
“The customer-led revolution to greater energy independence for so many Americans is well under way. The aging and increasingly costly power grid can no longer provide the stability, comfort, and peace of mind that generating and storing your own clean energy can,” said Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun.
Sunrun has been in the solar market since 2007 with its subscription service that made solar affordable and accessible to families with no upfront costs. Customers who subscribe benefit from a predictable energy price and the peace of mind that the system will be monitored, maintained and repaired 24/7, as well as a solar performance guarantee.
In 2016, Sunrun added battery storage to its core offering and in 2023, the company switched to a storage-first strategy, enabling customers to optimize their solar energy usage and ensure backup power during increasing and prolonged outages. Since introducing storage to its product range, Sunrun has provided its customers with more than 2.8 million hours of backup power during 659,000 grid outages.
