A milestone has been reached for the HNH Energy green ammonia project in Magallanes, following the Environmental Assessment Service’s (SEA) official recommendation to approve its environmental impact study. Proposed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners alongside Austrian developers, the US$11bn facility will establish a fully integrated production and export chain.
The initial phase features a 1.4GW onshore wind farm with 194 turbines, supported by 300MWh of battery storage. This renewable generation will power a 1GW electrolyser array and a synthesis unit to produce 2,200 tonnes of green ammonia daily. Crucial supporting infrastructure includes a seawater desalination plant and a dedicated marine export terminal.
Subject to final regional authorisation, a subsequent development phase could add 2.1GW of extra wind capacity to triple the overall output.
